About

Hi, I’m Rachel!  I am a 26-year-old educator, contemplator, bad joke teller, singer, soon-to-be farmer and natural builder.

This blog is a chronicle of the joys, challenges, growth, and journeys I am hoping to embark on during a year of exploration as I take time away from classroom teaching.

The title, “The Shmita Diaries,” refers to the sabbath year (literally “release”) that occurs every seven years in the Jewish calendar (leaving agricultural land fallow, forgiving debts, all kinds of rejuvenating things).  This coming year (starting in fall 2014) happens to be a shmita year in the Jewish calendar, making it extra nicely synchronous  that this is a time I have chosen for personal rejuvenation as well.

Thanks for stopping by!
